Singing and Performing

I have been singing and performing on the stage for more than thirty years. I started by helping backstage with the Hornby Drama Group, quickly graduating to performing and then later directing. My singing career started as a chorus member with the Hornby Occasionals' production of The Gondoliers in 1984, becoming a principal in 1988 with the part of Grosvenor in Patience. Since then I have sung the principal tenor roles in all of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, performing with the Hornby Occasionals every year since I started there, but also with Kendal and District Gilbert and Sullivan Society, Staveley Amateur Operatic Society and Heysham Operatic Society. More recently I have been the Producer at Staveley and at Hornby. I am a Life Member at Staveley. Here are a few (not very flattering!) show photos: as Ernest Dummkopf in The Grand Duke, as Nanki Poo - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 in The Mikado, as Ralph Rackstraw - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 in HMS Pinafore, as Alexis Pointdextre - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 in The Sorcerer, as Prince Hilarion - 2 - 3 in Princess Ida, as Archibald Grosvenor in Patience, as Lord Tolloller in Iolanthe, as Colonel Fairfax in Yeomen Of The Guard,as Marco - 2 in The Gondoliers, and as The Lord Chancellor - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 in Iolanthe

I have also performed with Matchbox Opera, singing Appollonia in Hayden's The Songstress and Pasquin, Sylvio and Dr Miracle in Bizet's Dr Miracle, with Nomad, singing John James Box - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 in Cox and Box by F.C. Burnand and Arthur Sullivan, and with Sounds Musical, singing Carboy in The Zoo by Bolton Rowe and Arthur Sullivan, and the Defendant in Trial by Jury by Gilbert and Sullivan. I have sung with a number of local choirs, including Cumbria Choral Initiative, Lancaster and District Choral Society, Hornby Choral Society, Kirkby Lonsdale Choral Society, The St Laurence Singers and Sounds Musical.

My musical tastes are catholic, ranging from Sixties music, Folk and Country and Western to Classical and Opera. Favourite composers include Beethoven, Handel, Mahler, Mozart, Puccini, Vaughan Williams and Verdi. Favourite groups range from The Beatles and Abba to Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkle, Il Divo and G4. Some singers I admire are Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jussi Bjorling, Robert Merrill, Bryn Terfel, Willard White, Andrea Scholl, Cecilia Bartoli, Emma Kirkby, Jessye Norman, Joan Sutherland, Marian Anderson, Janet Baker and Kathleen Ferrier.
