BUS CRASH - ONE FATALITY, 34 TREATED FOR INJURY

One person was killed and 34 treated for injuries following a crash in
Lancaster in the early hours of this morning. Three of the injured have
been detained in hospital.
A fully-laden bus was bringing students back from the regular
Wednesday night at the Carleton when the accident occurred at the
junction of Skerton Bridge and Parliament St at approximately 3.00 am.
A lorry is thought to have been involved.
The injured were treated in the A&E department of RLI. About 25
passengers were not unharmed but in a shocked condition.
The VC and College Principals and assistant deans were informed
immediately and met the shocked and injured victims on their return to
campus. Counsellors and chaplains are still on duty.
Two phone lines in the chaplaincy centre, staffed by chaplaincy staff,
have been dealing with exeptionally large numbers of calls from worried
parents since the news was announced nationally.
A police incident room is also handling enquiries. The VC has prepared
a press release which will go out later this morning.
The identity of the dead passenger, thought to be a male student, has
not been released.
