Hobbies and pastimes

Most of my free time is taken up with making things of one sort or another. Usually because the thing I'm making is simply not available at all, or not available at an affordable price. Sometimes, often mistakenly, because I think I can do a better job than the people making commercially available items.

Lorch lathe: I have a small lathe made in the 1960's by a German company called Lorch. It is one of the most delightfully made, and impractibly designed, machine tools ever made. Image of small lathe
Tool making: An inevitable consequence of engineering on a small scale is the fact that you spend a fair amount of time making tools. These are some of those I have made.

Flat and house renovation: in 2001 I acquired my own flat in the Lothian region. This is a page of some of the more successful improvements I have made to it. This page also has some of the rennovation, and redecoration work, to my current house in Lancashire which was aquired in 2006. Image of Lothian house
Feet forward motorcycle: an attempt to make motorcycles move from being playthings which although improved greatly, have not really changed since the mid 1950's after the universal adoption of rear suspension on them. FF two wheler
Diesel motors: a few ideas which if employed for diesel motors, both vehicular and stationary, will actually turn the much maligned diesel engine into a source of power which would be more environmentally friendly in some respects than wind turbines or wave generators. The Larson icesheet
Father's projects: My father has the most remarkable series of constructions and things which he has made. Here are a few of the examples of which I have managed to get photographs. The Lusitania
Clocks: I have a longstanding interest in mechanical clocks, and intend to make at least one at some stage. This page chronicles progress so far. Galileo's escapement
Bicycles: my means of getting into work. Carrerra road bike
Gardening: what do do after a days work in the Summer. My rear garden in Summer 2011
