Applying to Lancaster
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics combines leading research with high-quality teaching. A friendly and close-knit community, there are around 400 undergraduate students and over 60 staff. Our courses are modular, delivered by lectures and through small-group workshops, with assessment including both coursework and written examinations.
Our Information Booklet, containing details of the undergraduate courses taught by the department and information about university life at Lancaster, is available on request or as a PDF document. The 2012 edition is now available.
The department's excellent performance is reflected in the latest league tables, with Lancaster placed seventh in an aggregate table combining 2011 rankings from The Guardian, The Independent and The Times. The university is also very well regarded, rated in the top ten by each of these newspapers, and top in the north-west by the 2009, 2010 and 2011 National Student Surveys. The 2008 NSS rated the department second in the whole of the UK and the results for 2009, 2010 and 2011 were also very good. The 2012 Times Good University Guide contains a detailed university profile (subscription required), as does the Complete University Guide.
Entry requirements
Applications are welcome from all those who will benefit from studying here. Every UCAS form we receive is carefully examined by both the University Admissions Office and the Admissions Team in the department.
A-level entry requirements for our courses range from AAA to ABB, depending on the degree scheme, where the first grade stated must be obtained in a full A level in Mathematics. More precise information (including grade requirements for other qualifications) can be found by following the links on our Degree Courses page.
Further Mathematics, AEA and STEP
An A level or AS level in Further Mathematics is an advantage but not a requirement. The University is willing to be more flexible in making offers to students who have studied Further Mathematics but not met the standard offer. This also applies to applicants who take AEA or STEP papers. All these examinations are very helpful in preparing students for the study of mathematics at university level.
Students with disabilities
Lancaster University has extensive experience of successfully supporting students with a wide range of disabilities and special needs. The University Disability Support service has more information on its homepage.
International students
The University recognises the importance of international students, and aims to help prospective and current international students on a range of issues. More information (including details of entry and English-language requirements) can be found via the University's International Students pages. The department has statements for potential applicants from China, Cyprus and Poland.
Non-EU students will find details of the UK Government's new visa requirements (introduced at the end of March 2009) here.
Mature students
The University provides a range of services, facilities, guidance and support for mature students, with detailed information available at this link. The views of one of our mature students may be found here.
