Meeting on statistical modelling celebrating Murray Aitkin's 70th birthday by Brian Francis — last modified 2009-12-08 14:22
A one day meeting will be held at the Royal Statistical Society on Thursday April 15th 2010, to celebrate the contributions made by Murray Aitkin to statistical modelling in the social sciences. Murray was Professor of Statistics at Lancaster from 1977 to 1985.

The Postgraduate Statistics Centre at Lancaster has been regionally shortlisted for a Royal Institution of British Architects (RIBA) award. The Lancaster-Warwick node of the National Centre for Research Methods is organising a syposium at the University of California, Los Angeles to explore new methodologies for analysing mixed qualitative and quantitative social science data. Data modellers and qualitative researchers will explore methods of gaining more from mixed method studies. A highlight of the symposium is a presentation by Harold Garfinkel, who developed the ethnomethodology tradition in American sociology.

A new research methods project funded by ESRC at Lancaster This interdisciplinary project will develop a small set of modules and associated delivery system for teaching introductory statistics to social science students early in their undergraduate studies. Familiar and interesting scenarios will be used to enhance students' engagement with quantitative skills and illustrate their usefulness.
