The Medical Statistics Section

The Medical Statistics Section of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is dedicated to research into methodology for medical research, to the education of medical statisticians and to the teaching of quantitative methods to medical specialists. Our main areas of research and expertise include statistical methods for the design and analysis of clinical trials, the interpretation of complex neurological data, the modelling of processes of zoonosis, the interpretation of epidemiological data collected over time and space and the analysis of genomic data. Such work involves the application and extension of both frequentist and Bayesian methods and often of computer intensive approaches.

Our principal collaborations are with medical schools in the Northwest and with the pharmaceutical industry worldwide. Most of the latter contacts are channelled through the Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics Research Unit which is part of the Section.

The Section teaches medical and pharmaceutical modules on the Department’s MSc course in Statistics, and provides statistical courses for students following degrees in the life sciences. Research students within the Section work on projects related to the interests of the staff, and often have contacts with our external collaborators.

The Section plays a full role within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and our activities and interests overlap and blend with staff of the other constituent sections.
