Why Lancaster?

Beautiful Lancaster

A Thriving Research Environment

We are home to one of the leading research groups in Statistics in the UK. In particular we have had more RSS read papers and papers in the leading statistics journals than any other department in the UK. (Details.) We have a strong record of PhD students publishing quality papers on their research.

Quality Training

The Statistics group is a founder member of the APTS PhD training courses in Statistics, and is a leading organiser of the NATCOR PhD training courses in OR. The Mathematics group is a member of the MAGIC consortium which uses video conferencing technology to deliver postgraduate-level lecture courses in Mathematics. We support our students to attend these courses.

There are also many training opportunities within the department as well as seminars, and meetings of informal research groups.

As a result you can be confident of the quality of supervision and environment that you will get at Lancaster.

The beautiful campus of Lancaster University is situated on the outskirts of the historic city of Lancaster. Our location provides students with easy access to the idyllic Lake District as well as the lively cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

State of the Art Teaching and Learning Facilities

The Postgraduate Statistics Centre is one of 74 nationally funded Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and the UK's only centre that specialises in postgraduate Statistics, with a focus on researching new related teaching methods and technologies.

All PhD students are given a departmental laptop, shared office space and have generous support for attending training courses and UK and international conferences.
