Funding

Lancaster University has one of the largest and strongest statistics research groups in the UK comprising 18 academic staff, 7 research associates and 32 FTE research students. In the 2008 RAE, 60% of Lancaster's Statistics and OR outputs were graded as 3* or 4*. The statistics group takes a leading role in the development of statistical methodology such as Markov Chain Monte Carlo, particle filtering, extreme value theory, wavelets and the analysis of longitudinal and spatial data. Areas of application include medicine, industry and the social sciences. We welcome applications in any of these areas. The Mathematics Section of the Department is well-known for its active research and research supervision in diverse areas of Modern Analysis and Algebra. These areas include stochastic analysis (classical and quantum), random matrices, partial differential equations, operator algebras, Lie algebras, Lie theory, group representation theory and quantum groups. Applications for PhDs in any of these or related areas are encouraged.

FACULTY STUDENTSHIPS

We currently have available a three year PhD Studentship funded by the Faculty of Science and Technology which is open to all students including exceptionally strong overseas students. The deadline for completed applications for this studentship is 21 February 2012.

We also have a number of PhD studentships available in Statistics and Probability from the UK Research Councils. Details of these studentships follow.

EPSRC STUDENTSHIPS

We normally have a number of EPSRC studentships each year. These full studentships pay tuition fees plus a stipend for the length of the PhD (three and a half years). The deadline for completed applications (including letters of references) is 21 February 2012. Standard Research Council eligibility criteria apply.

ESRC STUDENTSHIPS

There is an opportunity to undertake a PhD in Applied Social Statistics through the ESRC’s North West Doctoral Training Centre (NWDTC). These are aimed at students with a social science or health background who wish to learn and apply modern statistical methods; or for students who have a mathematical background and want to conduct statistical research with applications in the social sciences. More information on the NWDTC can be found at:

http://www.nwdtc.ac.uk/index.html

There is also funding to undertake an MSc in Quantitative Methods prior to undertaking the PhD. Further details of this scheme are available at:

http://www.maths.lancs.ac.uk/department/postgraduate/applied

STOR-I STUDENTSHIPS

We also have a Doctoral Training Centre in Statistics and Operational Research (STOR-i) with a number of studentships available for research in Industrial Statistics. For more information, please contact Dr Idris Eckley (i.eckley@lancaster.ac.uk) and see:

http://www.stor-i.lancs.ac.uk/

The department is hoping to attract further studentships. Please check the departmental web page for the latest news.
