PhD Programme

PhD Researchers at our Research Conference

We have opportunities, many with fully funded studentships, for postgraduate study in the following areas:

The Department also welcomes applications from part-time students and PhD students from other universities who wish to visit us as part of their studies.

Lancaster has an internationally recognised reputation for research in areas including Applied Probability, Bayesian and Computational Statistics, Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics, Social Statistics, Time Series and Extremes. The Department has been awarded a prestigious doctoral training centre in Statistics and Operational Research.

We have partnerships with many organisations including AstraZeneca, Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, Shell and Unilever.

We have funding for several fully funded studentships available for both UK/EU students and overseas students.

With Oxford and Southampton, we are in the top three for the most number of PhDs awarded in the recent RAE period and for the total grant income.

The beautiful campus of Lancaster University is situated on the outskirts of the historic city of Lancaster. Our location provides students with easy access to the idyllic Lake District as well as the lively cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

All of our PhD students are encouraged to participate in conferences and are provided with a laptop for the duration of their studies.

Our previous PhD students have gone on to follow a wide range of career paths.

English language requirement: For admission, one needs to satisfy the University’s usual English language requirement which is one of the following: IELTS (British Council) minimum 6.5, TOEFL minimum 237 (computer-based) or 93 (internet-based), Cambridge Certificate of min grade C, a recent GCSE min grade C. We no longer require a GRE score.
