Research

The Department is involved in a number of research areas such as Pure Mathematics, Statistics, Extremes and Medical and Pharmaceutical Statistics.
We currently have research opportunities for postgraduate study in Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Social Statistics.
Members of the Mathematics Section pursue research and supervise in diverse areas of Algebra and Analysis. In Algebra this includes representation theory for finite groups, Lie algebras, Lie theory and related topics. In Modern Analysis the areas include noncommutative probability, stochastic analysis, random matrices, partial differential equations, infinite dimensional spaces and infinite matrices (operators) and operator algebras. Furthermore there are research directions related to more applied themes which concern Schrodinger and Pauli equations, wavelets and geometric constraint systems.
The section's strength is in developing new methodologies with applications in the real world. Our work is used in analyses of environmental, medical, financial and social science data.
