MSc, PgDip and PgCert Programmes in Quantitative Methods for Science, Social Science and Medicine
(please note that these programmes replace our previous MSc/MRes/PgDip programmes in Applied Social Statistics)
The MSc and PgDip programmes in Quantitative Methods for Science, Social Science and Medicine can be studied full-time for one year, or part-time over two to five years. The courses are particularly suited to those wishing to study part-time as part of a programme of Continuing Professional Development.
Students who only wish to study a small approved selection of courses from the MSc programme can gain a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) in Quantitative Methods.
The programmes are designed to provide students with a firm grounding in enhanced quantitative skills by providing a practical foundation to the theory and application of statistical methods in the physical, social and health sciences.
Studying substantive theory, research methods, data collection (including how to use data from large Government social surveys) and statistical analysis, students are encouraged to explore ways in which this knowledge can be applied to areas such as science, criminology, economics, health and medical research, management, psychology and sociology. The policy implications of quantitative research will be considered throughout the course.
Detailed information on the current programme is contained in the Course Handbook
The programme in 2011-12 will offer optional specialist pathways in:
- Scientific Research Methods
- Crime and Social Statistics
- Statistical Methods for Health Research
- Teaching Statistics (by distance-learning)*
*The Teaching Statistics pathway may be studied part-time as a standalone PgCert and is suitable for lecturers wishing to teach statistics to students from other disciplines or teachers in secondary education wishing to enhance their statistical skills.
