Why Lancaster?

Four reasons to follow the MSc programme in Statistics at Lancaster:

Quality teaching in a thriving research environment

In addition to being the only Centre of Excellence in the Teaching and Learning of Postgraduate Statistics, the statistics group is a founder member of the APTS PhD training courses in Statistics, and is lead organiser of the NATCOR PhD training courses in OR; and support our students to attend these. There are also many training opportunities within the department, both through MSc courses, seminars, and meetings of informal research groups.

The group is also one of the leading research groups in Statistics in the UK. This can be seen by our 6* rating from the 2001 RAE, and the evidence of quality publications since 2001. In particular we have had more RSS read papers and papers in the leading statistics journals than any other department in the UK. (Details.) As a result you can be confident of the quality of supervision and environment that you will get at Lancaster.

State of the art teaching and learning facilities

The Postgraduate Statistics Centre is one of 74 nationally funded Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) and the UK's only centre that specialises in postgraduate statistics, with a focus on researching new related teaching methods and technologies.

This has resulted in considerable investment in

  • A new, state of the art learning environment for our postgraduate courses;
  • Researching and developing new approaches for teaching statistics

An active careers programme and an enviable MSc employability record

Each year, the department runs a programme of careers talks given by professional statisticians from a range of different employers. In the past, these have included talks by statisticians in the Pharmaceutical, Oil and Gas and Media industries. These talks provide an insight into possible career paths, describing the role of a statistician, career opportunities etc.

Our MSc graduates also have an exceptional employment track-record. See here for further details
