National Student Survey

The Mathematics and Statistics department is delighted to see its excellent teaching recognised once again in the National Student Survey. In the 2011 returns, published by HEFCE on 17th August 2011, 89% of respondents (who were studying full-time for a first degree with the department) agreed with the statement, "Overall, I am satisfied with the quality of the course". This compares well with the 2009 and 2010 figures of 91% and 92%, respectively, and it confirms the high standard of our undergraduate programme.

Research Assessment Exercise

The Pure Mathematics section is pleased that the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirm the excellence of its research, with 10% judged as "world leading" (rated 4*) and 50% judged as "internationally excellent" or better. Overall the Exercise classified 85% of its research activity as "internationally recognised". These figures demonstrate the high quality and growing strength of the group.

The Statistics sections, which form the fifth-largest centre for quality research in statistics and operations research in the UK, with over 21 full-time-equivalent staff, were assessed as follows: 15% of their research was found to be "world leading", 60% "internationally excellent" or better, and 95% of research activity "internationally recognised".

Together with our outstanding reputation for teaching, these figures underline the superb quality of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University.
