Jonathan Tawn (academic staff, statistics)
Professor of Statistics since 1996 and awarded the Royal Statistical Society Guy Medal in Bronze in 1993. Jonathan was Head of the Statistics Section of the Department from 1996-2000 and then Head of Department from 2000-2007. For the academic years 2007-8 and 2008-9 he is on sabbatical but will mostly be based in Lancaster throughout this time.
Research Interests
- Wide interests in Extreme value theory, methods and applications:
- Theory and Methods:
- Multivariate extreme value and joint probability problems
- Time series and covariate modelling for extreme values
- Structuring asymptotically justified models to capture process structure
- Applications:
- Environmental modelling in hydrology and oceanography, financial modelling, sports records
- Other areas of statistics that interest me are:
- Multivariate distributions (Copulas), Spatial statistics, Non-regular inference

- 1960s music: The Beatles, The Kinks, Beach Boys and Bob Dylan.
- Walking: the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and Lake District
- Archeology: stone circles and burial chambers
- Swimming: supporting and teaching at Carnforth Otters
