Post: Chair in Statistics (Ref A015)
Salary: Professorial
Closing date for completed applications: 15th March 2010.
Interviews for the post will be: May 2010.
Applications are invited for a Chair in Statistics within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University. The Chair arises from the University’s recent award by EPSRC of £4.3M for a Doctoral Training Centre in Statistics and Operational Research, with the Centre having a substantial industrial involvement and focus. Lancaster is one of the largest UK Statistics research groups with 24 academic staff. Collectively with Operational Research (based in Management Science) the Statistics and Operational Research group at Lancaster is among the largest and most influential in Europe with 40 FTE academic staff. Statistics and Operational Research at Lancaster has a history of sustained research excellence in successive RAEs since 1992 and are currently ranked in the top five in the UK terms of HEFCE research funding.
We are looking for applications from candidates with an international research reputation in statistics (interpreted broadly, to include statistical methodology, applied probability and stochastic operational research). It would be desirable that the candidate’s research interests complement existing areas of strength at Lancaster in applied probability, change-point analysis, clinical trials methodology, extreme value theory and methods, graphical methods, heuristic methods, mathematical programming, longitudinal data analysis, particle filtering, social statistics, spatial statistics, statistical genetics, stochastic dynamic programming and stochastic programming. Candidates should be willing to play a leadership role in the Statistics group, attract external research funding and collaborate with external organizations. The Doctoral Training Centre and the substantial commitments of our industrial partners offer great opportunities for increased postgraduate student numbers, enhanced training and research collaboration. We are looking for the appointed person to take a leading role in the Centre activities through collaborating with industrial partners on statistical research and applications.
Teaching reflects the research diversity, including: undergraduate degrees in mathematics and statistics; a MSc programme in Statistical Science, which has optional pathways in medical, pharmaceutical and environmental statistics; a MSc in applied social statistics; statistical modules in a MSc in Quantitative Finance; the training components for students in the Doctoral Training Centre; and a range of collaborative teaching with other disciplines.
