When does a geometric embedding of a graph admit a continuous deformation into a non-congruent arrangement? This question motivates the analysis of bar-joint frameworks and their rigidity or flexibility. In this talk I will survey the main results of rigidity theory from the perspective of inductive constructions. I will also discuss joint work with John Owen and Stephen Power extending these results to frameworks embedded on 2-dimensional manifolds.
