If X is a Banach space and S is a subset of the unit ball of X, the set cp(S) of contractive perturbations of S consists of those elements a of X such that a+x and a–x remain in the unit ball of X for each x in S. In this talk, various objects in a C*-algebra A will be characterised in terms of the size and the location of the contractive perturbations. These will include collections of compact elements, hereditary C*-subalgebras and essential ideals.
