We survey recent advances in Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by their K-theory data.
Our main result is a classification theorem which, in a certain sense, is perpendicular to the classification result of Elliott, Gong and Li. This suggests a strategy of how to possibly combine the two approaches to attack the general case of Elliott's conjecture, localized at the Jiang-Su algebra Z.
We also comment on a number of possible future developments.
