Graham Jameson Meeting 26th May 2009
A conference on Banach spaces, operators and inequalities in honour of Graham Jameson
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University will host a one-day meeting in honour of Graham Jameson on the occasion of his retirement, thus celebrating his many significant contributions to the department and the wider UK mathematical community during his 35-year career in Lancaster.
The meeting will be held in Lecture Theatre A54 on the ground floor of the Postgraduate Statistics Centre (PSC) which is adjacent to Fylde College; the PSC is labelled 41a on the campus map.
The theme of the meeting will reflect Graham's main research interests: Banach spaces, operators and inequalities.
There will be six invited one-hour talks, given according to the following schedule:
- 9:00-10:00 Edward W. Odell (Texas, USA), Embedding Theorems in Banach spaces.
- 10:05-11:05 Thomas Schlumprecht (Texas A&M, USA), The universality of l1 as a dual space.
- 11:05-11:30 Coffee break.
- 11:30-12:30 Rafal Latala (Warsaw, Poland), Khintchine, Kahane and related inequalities.
- 12:30-13:30 Lunch break. (Payment for lunch is included in the registration fee.)
- 13:30-14:30 Timothy Feeman (Villanova, USA), The Secret Lives of Power Functions.
- 14:35-15:35 Charles J. Read (Leeds), Weak amenability and irregular commutative semigroups.
- 15:40-16:40 Richard Haydon (Oxford).
A more detailed programme, including abstracts, is available.
The meeting will be preceded by a meeting of the North British Functional Analysis Seminar (NBFAS) on Monday 25th May; the NBFAS speaker will be Stephen J. Dilworth (South Carolina, USA). The NBFAS meeting will also take place in Lecture Theatre A54 of the PSC and consist of a one-hour introductory lecture for graduate students given by Andras Zsak, starting at 13:15, followed by two lectures 14:30-15:30 and 16:00-17:00 entitled "Convergence of some greedy algorithms in Banach spaces" by the NBFAS speaker.
There will be a special dinner at the Sultan of Lancaster in honour of Graham Jameson, starting at 7pm on Monday 25th May; the cost of this dinner is included in the registration fee. The Sultan of Lancaster is located in Brock Street in the centre of Lancaster, very near the Common Gardens bus stop.
The registration fee for the conference is 30 pounds and covers the dinner on 25th May and the lunch on 26th May.
